What is the Unix timestamp?

The Unix timestamp is roughly the number of seconds that have passed since midnight UTC on January 1st, 1970, otherwise known as the day that Unix decided the universe began and started counting time. It's give or take a few seconds because of a few time-related concepts that we don't bother to actually spend the time necessary to understand. If a handful of seconds difference between your timestamp and realizty makes a critical difference in your application, then you're being too picky.

Unix timestamps are largely used by programmer types to track time. If you know how many seconds have gone by since a certain date and time, you can calculate what date and time it is now. Sometimes, it's necessary or helpful to know what the current Unix timestamp is without having to write up code for it, hence, this page.
